Mark Guzman has written three useful Mephisto plugins – Feed Reader, Comment Emailer, and Post Pinger. Now that Mephisto has gotten fairly stable in its feature set, I think it’s time to start exploring how we can extend Mephisto. Bill Katz has been working towards this since day one, and mentioned a migration plugin to use string numbering. This lets you svk/piston hackers add custom migrations without running into issues on the next update. Still, I’m wondering if something like plugin migrations would be a better solution.

I've also got a comment notification plugin here: http://opensource.agileevolved.com/svn/root/rails_plugins/mephisto_comment_notification/trunk/ Perhaps it might be worth maintaining a dedicated plugin page on the community wiki to avoid any duplication of effort (not to say mine is better or worse than Mark's!). Glad to see a post pinger plugin though!

Regarding the best way of extending mephisto - and this is something I started looking at a few months ago - I think it would be good to have a Plugins tab where you can list the plugins installed (and perhaps install new ones?) and provide some kind of API that plugins can hook into to create settings pages for plugins.

We have found Mephisto to be fantastic but the only thing that is holding us back from really adopting it as a system is the lack of good, easy, clean extensibility and customisation. A good API and/or plugin architecture would be much appreciated by many I imagine. Keep up the good work, Galen
